چکیده

Floating persistent debris, primarilymade fromplastic, disperses long distances from source areas and accumulates in oceanic gyres. However, biofouling can increase the density of debris items to the point where they sink. Buoyancy is related to item volume, whereas fouling is related to surface area, so small items (which have high surface area to volume ratios) should start to sink sooner than large items. Empirical observations off SouthAfrica support this prediction:moving offshore from coastal source areas there is an increase in the size offloating debris, an increase in the proportion of highly buoyant items (e.g. sealed bottles, floats and foamed plastics), and a decrease in the proportion of thin items such as plastic bags andflexible packagingwhich have high surface area to volume ratios. Size-specific sedimentation ratesmay be one reason for the apparent paucity of small plastic items floating in the world’s oceans.

Cefpodoxime Proxetil Floating Microspheres: Formulation and In Vitro Evaluation

The objective of the present study was to develop floating microspheres of cefpodoxime proxetil in order to achieve an extended retention in the upper GIT, which may result in enhanced absorption and thereby improved bioavailability. The microspheres were prepared by non-aqueous solvent evaporation method using polymers such as hydroxyl propyl methyl cellulose (HPMC K 15 M), ethyl cellulo...

Floating microspheres encapsulating carvedilol for the effective management of hypertension

Carvedilol (CVD) is an antihypertensive agent with a short half-life, pH-dependent solubility, and narrow absorption window. The purpose of this research was to prepare a floating-drug delivery-system of carvedilol to increase its half-life. The present study investigates the preparation of carvedilol-floating microspheres, evaluates the floating-drug delivery-system (FDDS) (by scanning electro...

Moving Load Analysis of Submerged Floating Tunnels

The concept of floating submerged tunnels becomes increasingly attractive idea to cross the straits. The structural solution in these bridges includes buoyancy force on tunnel body plus tension in mooring tethers. This paper investigates the effect of submergence on the dynamic response of submerged floating tunnels due to moving load. The inertial effect of the fluid on the submerged structure...

Does transport affect the incidence of intraventricular hemorrhage in preterm infants?

Objective: Preterm infants are prone to intraventricular hemorrhage. They may suffer from significant morbidity and mortality particularly in those with high-grade hemorrhage. Our objective was to determine the incidence of intraventricular hemorrhage in premature infants transported to a tertiary center compared with those delivered at the level III facility.  Methods: We evaluated all prematu...
